September 2009
Hello Everyone!
Fall has arrived! The dogwoods, sourwoods and native magnolia are already beginning to change color. Given the rain this summer it should be a stunning show in October and November.
|
The summer of 2009 was also kind to the trout. No losses at all. It has rained practically every day since May. The water temperature stayed below 65 degrees all summer as well. Its been cool enough at night to light a fire since late August!
Thanks to the favorable conditions the fishing has been unbelievable. We were able to book quite a few "last minute" trips thanks to the perfect weather. All guests caught LOTS of fish over 24 inches and almost every group landed at least one of the golden trout. Obviously a few goldens have migrated from parts south. I stocked 35 "store bought" golden trout last March in the northern section and the lower section now has a dozen or more. These gold marker trout provide valuable information re: migratory patterns and predator activity.
Our streambred rainbows and browns are already showing brilliant spawning color and the browns are beginning to run. Both species are busy building spawning beds. I don't think the goldens spawn....
There are still many (read: most of them) dates available in October and November. Given the dearth of flies they've seen in the last few months it should be the BEST Fall season in a decade. The fish are once again as large as they were ten years ago. Every group has landed at least one over 30 inches. Just like the old days....
Flies
The standard working flies both wet and dry are listed on the website. For professional guidance please visit our (lifelong) friends, the Merrimans, at the Fishhawk in Buckhead. Those guys know their fish and most have guided here so they know what's working. Or visit their new shop at 3095 Peachtree Road. It is Fishing Heaven. Website - thefishhawk.com or call 404 237 3473.
Specials
The "last minute" special has been held over. Indefinitely. Make your reservation within seven days and the rod fee is 250.00 / lodging 125.00.
2009 is going to be a great Fall season!
Events
Another overlooked market! Family reunions! Also a crowd that happily shares bathrooms. All cabins are available (off season) for family events, birthdays, anniversarys and reunions. We have 14 private bedrooms. Some may want to fish!
News
After weeks, nay months, of market research consisting of endless episodes of "Bridezilla" , I continue to refine my new "weddings" business model. (I'm about to refine the bride right out of the picture.) Let's face it: Brigadoon is a guy place. Among other issues key to bridal happiness is HOT water. As most of you know we have systemic plumbing problems. Think "grinder pump", "septic field" and the all important "overflow" valve. I don't relish having to explain to a gaggle of overwrought women what a "boat shower" or God Forbid, a "grinder pump" is....
Other bride issues include BUGS. We are in the BUG business here! We love them. Collect and examine them, ooh and ahh over them. A bride may not feel the same reverence for an eight inch helgermite. I plan to focus on the Forgotten Man, ie: The Groom. And, of course, his underwriter, the Father of the Bride. Known collectively as the "Poor Dears". These guys need their own get away! Single malt, cigars, steak and a trophy trout - what more could a man ask of his wedding event? Brigadoon is the perfect location for the MEN in the bridal party! A day on the river is a great groomsmen's gift idea too!
The new website for bridal and other event information is - brigadoonevents.com.
