My fishing was based from Brigadoon Lodge, right on the Soque about eight miles from Clarkesville, Georgia. My first sight of the river there was encouraging. The banks were virtually in their wild state, complete with low branches guarding many holes and runs – not too manicured at all. It did not take long to confirm the presence of nice fish: A 17-inch rainbow hit on my third cast.more

Brigadoon The concept of Brigadoon in Clarkesville on the Soque River began during a late spring day in 1989 as Rebekah Stewart was on her way home to Atlanta from a friend’s house at Lake Rabun. She decided to The great room in Brigadoon’s main lodge and its patio overlook the Soque River. As Stewart crossed a gorgeous open view of the Soque River, she saw a sign that indicated land along the river was for sale, so she stopped her car to investigate.more Ho
Bamboo fly rod maker Bill Oyster and best-selling author George Black fish the beautiful Soque River in North Georgia
Almost nothing about the movie had stuck with me. As a native-born Scot, I still winced whenever I thought of Cyd Charisse’s accent (“There’s a laddie, wearrry and wanderin’ frrree”). Other than that, nothing but the image of Gene Kelly peering down at the lights, and the rooftops emerging from the mist. That image, inevitably, was in my mind as I navigated the twists and turns of Georgia Highway 197, through the fog and the cold evening rain, until at last I glimpsed a nimbus of light and the indistinct shape of buildings and an asphalt driveway with a sign that said “Brigadoon Lodge.”
As the spring-fed Soque River tumbles through the Appalachian foothills less than two hours north of Atlanta, it takes a wide turn where it passes the stone-and-timber Brigadoon Lodge—creating a spectacular habitat for wild trout. From the slate patio, surrounded by 300-year-old rhododendrons and old-growth hemlock stands, watch arm-length rainbows and browns lurk in clear green pools while mist rises off the distant Blue Ridge Mountains.more

The word “STRIKE” lunged across the river just as the line went slack while I watched the silver flash escape. Clearly, I thought, Brigadoon Lodge was no mythical village in the Highlands of Scotland; it was the place that truly delivered. Clarkesville, Georgia’s Brigadoon, is natural drama personified and patronized by serious fly fishermen, among them many well-known figures such as Jimmy Carter, Robert Rubin and Ted Turner.

Delta features Brigadoon Lodge in their SKY Magazine. We arrive at Brigadoon Lodge in the mountains of northeast Georgia too late in the day to fish but in time for a quick stroll. As my wife, Anne, our friend Maury and I walk toward the soothing sound of the Soque River’s riffles, we overtake a lad carrying two white joint-compound buckets. ..
